Names
  a) Functions -- The name of a plant can facilitate
    - communication,
    - retrieval of information under the name,
    - retrieval of information behind the name, and
    - addition of new information under the name.

  b) Types of names
    - Common names, which are used in daily life, and may change with different languages and practice. Sometimes, one common name is applied to several plants, while one plant may bear several names. In Hong Kong, Chinese common names are very useful for searching information in Chinese. Moreover, it should be noted that Chinese words used for plant names are often associated with certain subfixes (木, 禾, 瓜, 米, 草, 豆, 麥, 黍, 麻) which form a label to the fact that the names concern plants. Many Sinologists (experts on Chinese subjects) are impressed with this design of Chinese words. English common names are often used too. They help to link to information written in Engish.
    - Scientific names (Latin names), which are used for accurate specification of a particular species. Only one scientific name is allowed for each plant species, e.g. Bauhinia blakeana, the Hong Kong City Flower.
